Who are Modernise Your Stairs?

The company was founded in 2002 by my dad Shane Wilson, and we have been serving the north west for almost 20 years. We specialise in bespoke staircases in all different materials such as exotic hardwoods and contemporary glass and steels. The company name is actually Vale of Wigan Ltd, but with our growth over recent years decided to rebrand as Modernise Your Stairs to branch out to other local areas. We have recently just invested in a brand new Staircase Showroom which we are greatly proud of.

Do you only work in Wigan?

Not at all, we actually offer a nationwide service, we travel all over the country. Don’t get me wrong the bulk of our work is in the North West but that’s purely because of our reputation. We don’t have a massive advertising budget like some of the bigger companies. We’ve done Stair Renovations in Scotland and as low down as Winchester so yes we certainly cover the majority of the UK.

Why do people renovate their staircase?

A staircase can sometimes be a forgotten feature and in most cases is the first thing you are greeted with when stepping into someone’s home. We can turn a tired old staircase into a stunning focal point totally transforming a hallway. If carefully designed a staircase can also make an area appear much larger and allow more natural light to flow through. Not only are they nice to look at but can also add value to your home. Another major factor is maintenance, all of our staircases come fully finished meaning you won’t have to keep sanding and repainting and are backed with a 10-year guarantee.

How do I get a quote?

Getting a quote is easy, if you’re from the Wigan or the surrounding area then we advise coming down to our Staircase Showroom with photographs of your staircase and our team can work you a price whilst you browse or have a cup of coffee. If our showroom is a bit too far away, then you can visit our website and from there attach photographs of your staircase and again we can work you a price via email. Or failing that we also have someone who can pop out to your home and give you a price that way.

How long does a Stair Renovation take?

The average job tends to take 2 to 3 days to complete but every job is different, we have some jobs that take as little as 1 day, and we’ve even worked on some houses that have taken 2 weeks believe it or not. But be rest assured our friendly and tidy staff do their best to keep disruption to a minimum.

How do you advertise?

In fairness we don’t tend to advertise much. Much of our work is word of mouth which is second to none in terms of advertising. Plus, we have over 150 five star reviews on platforms such as, Facebook, google and yell which speaks volumes when it comes to having people working in your home.

What does a Stair Renovation mean?

A stair renovation or stair refurbishment is usually the most cost effective way to transform a staircase as opposed to replacing it entirely. What we do is we completely take out the existing newel posts and balustrades and replace them with solid new stair parts. All of these new parts are glued and screwed meaning they’re more structurally sound than they were originally. We overclad the existing stair stringers, these are the sides of the staircase, using oak mdf and trims. We then install either glass panels, or spindles or even wrought iron panels and the end result is you get a staircase that looks like a brand-new hardwood flight at much lower cost.

What is French Polish?

French polish is a process that consists of six different coats of polish, shellac, lacquers and wax. This results in a very smooth finish and protects the wood from any oily greasy finger marks and helps against splits in the grain. All our staircases come French polished as standard ensuring no maintenance for the customer and have a 10-year guarantee as standard.

Why choose Modernise Your Stairs?

We have been a well-established family run company for 20 years, and take massive pride in what we do, this is backed up by over 150 five-star reviews. We have a brand-new Staircase Showroom where you can see the product before you buy, not many other staircase companies can offer that. Over the years we have handpicked our team and would put them up against anyone. If you’re still unsure, then come down to our showroom and see for yourself what we do. We also have a workshop at another location where we make all our staircases and stair parts. We don’t subcontract any work as all of our team are directly employed by us. I have no hesitation in saying if you have a Vale of Wigan staircase we will more than exceed your needs.
